OpenAI is preparing an always-on assistant for ChatGPT called “o,” after the unannounced feature briefly appeared in the list of benefits for the $100 ChatGPT Pro plan. Users spotted the line “o, your always-on assistant” on the plan page before it was removed. OpenAI has not confirmed or denied that it is working on the assistant, and the feature is not currently available to any ChatGPT subscribers.
The “o” entry sat alongside the other benefits of the $100 Pro tier: more Work and Codex usage, maximum memory, 100GB of file storage, and early access to new features. OpenAI has not said whether “o” will stay exclusive to the Pro tier or reach other ChatGPT plans.
ChatGPT “o” Configuration Hints at an Email Identity
References to the assistant also appear in a dynamic configuration used by ChatGPT. The entry includes display_name: “o” together with email_suffix: “-o,” which indicates that the assistant is set up with some form of email identity or email capability. OpenAI has not explained what the email suffix does or whether “o” will send, read, or sort messages for users.
The “always-on” label points to an assistant that keeps helping with tasks while the user is not actively using ChatGPT. OpenAI has not described what that means in practice, or which apps, accounts, or services “o” would connect to.
Separate references mention an internal system called “Aeon,” which relates to custom agents for ChatGPT workspaces. The “o” assistant is a different product aimed at consumers, based on where it surfaced in the Pro plan listing.
OpenAI has already confirmed that DevDay 2026 takes place on September 29 in San Francisco, with technical sessions, demos, and new tools on the schedule. The company announced its GPT-6 Sol and Luna models earlier this month, and DevDay is the next scheduled OpenAI event where product news is expected.
ChatGPT Pro subscribers have nothing to enable at this point. Users interested in the assistant can:
- Watch the ChatGPT Pro plan page and OpenAI’s DevDay announcements for an official description of “o.”
- Read the permissions OpenAI lists for the assistant before granting it access to an inbox.
OpenAI has not announced a release date, supported platforms, or regional availability for “o,” and the listing that revealed the name has already been taken down.
