New Windows 11 Preview Adds Sysmon, Fixes Explorer Issues

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26220.7752 (KB5074177) to the Beta Channel, which includes native Sysmon support and a few targeted fixes. This build is based on Windows 11 version 25H2 and is available now for Insiders who are part of the Beta Channel.

As with previous Beta channel builds, changes are divided between those that are rolled out gradually to systems with the “Get the latest updates as they are available” toggle enabled, and fixes that are applied more broadly over time.

Native Sysmon Support Now Included in Windows

The first and most important change in this build is the inclusion of built-in Sysmon, which no longer requires a separate Sysinternals download.

Sysmon is a tool that logs detailed system events for use in threat detection, auditing, and forensic analysis. These events are sent to the Windows Event Log, making them compatible with security tools and custom workflows.

Sysmon is disabled by default and needs to be manually enabled.

How to Enable Native Sysmon Support

There are two ways to turn on built-in Sysmon:

Using Settings

  • Open Settings
  • Go to System > Optional features
  • Select More Windows features
  • Check Sysmon and apply changes

Using PowerShell or Command Prompt

  • Run: Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:Sysmon
  • After installation, initialize Sysmon with: sysmon -i

If Sysmon is already installed from Sysinternals, you must uninstall that version first. The functionality remains the same, and Microsoft has confirmed documentation will be added directly to Windows in a future update.

Voice Access Gains Dutch Support

Voice Access now supports the Netherlands locale. No other language or functionality changes are listed in this build.

File Explorer and App Reliability Fixes:

This build includes a group of fixes rolling out gradually to users with the update toggle enabled.

File Explorer fixes:

  • Improved keyboard navigation and access key behavior
  • Resolved issues when renaming folders with custom names
  • Fixed missing icons and tooltips for the “Add to favorites” option

Beyond File Explorer, Microsoft addressed a bug that caused apps to freeze when accessing files on OneDrive or Dropbox. Some Outlook configurations using PST files stored on OneDrive could also freeze or constantly reload data.

What Insiders Should Do

Insiders who want early access to features like built-in Sysmon should ensure the “Get the latest updates” toggle is enabled under Settings > Windows Update.

Those preferring a more stable experience can leave the toggle disabled. Features will still roll out gradually once they’re ready for wider testing.

As with other Beta Channel builds, note that some features may change, be removed, or never make it to a stable release.
