Microsoft has denied that Xbox holds exclusive cloud streaming rights to GTA 6 and says the game will not stream to PC at launch. Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball made the statement in a post on X, after reports claimed that Xbox Cloud Gaming would be the only place to stream the game when it releases in November.
“While the excitement for GTA VI and Xbox is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting,” Ball wrote. “We are looking forward to launching GTA VI on Xbox November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”
What the GTA 6 Streaming Reports Claimed
According to the reports, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees at a recent internal town hall that the company had something planned for GTA 6 that “no other platform holder is doing.” Sources identified that plan as exclusive streaming rights for the game, starting with its November launch.
The claim drew attention because of what it implied for PC players. Xbox Cloud Gaming runs on PCs, smart TVs, and mobile devices, so an Xbox streaming deal would have let players without a console run GTA 6 on a PC before Rockstar releases a native port. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, and the game launches on consoles only.
Ball’s statement rules out both parts of the report. Xbox does not have exclusive streaming rights, and the Xbox Cloud Gaming app on PC will not offer GTA 6. The wording leaves open streaming on other devices, but Microsoft has not specified which ones will support the game.
Xbox Cloud Gaming Hour Limits Start the Same Month
November also brings new monthly limits to Xbox Cloud Gaming. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will get 15 hours of streaming, with more hours available for purchase, and pay-as-you-go plans are scheduled to arrive the same month.
Those plans would let players without a console pay for timed access to streamed games, although Ball’s statement means a PC will not be one of the ways to stream GTA 6.
Sony holds the marketing rights to GTA 6. PlayStation is selling limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers, and Rockstar promotes the game with branding that says it “plays best” on PS5. Xbox, for its part, says its share of GTA 6 pre-orders matches its share of the console market.
For Xbox console owners, the plan has not changed. GTA 6 still launches on Xbox on November 19, the same date Rockstar used when it confirmed GTA 6 hurricanes and six map regions.
Players who hoped to stream the game on a PC through Xbox Cloud Gaming will need a console at launch, and Rockstar has not publicly commented on the streaming reports.
