Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over one million copies on its first full day of availability, as a result of which the total sales of all the Onimusha games worldwide have gone beyond 10 million units.
The fact that it took one million copies in a single day is a major achievement for a series that had been mostly inactive for twenty years, as it had previously taken two days for Pragmata to reach that figure.
The PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch versions of the game were all released on September 4, with it receiving a Metacritic score of 85 and an OpenCritic score of 86.
In order to launch the game, Capcom organized an early-access demo campaign, a step that critics think helped to explain the game’s excellent opening.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword Setting and Capcom’s Response
Way of the Sword is the first new title in the Onimusha series to have been released more than twenty years ago; it is set in early Edo-period Kyoto and puts the player in the role of Miyamoto Musashi, a legendary swordsman who is based on a real samurai and who wields the Oni Gauntlet.
The player fights against demons, Capcom combining the traditional combat system with modern visuals, feudal Japanese landscapes, and a storyline in which the player has to face demonic forces that are invading the city.
The critics responded in a positive manner, the film receiving an 85 on Metacritic and 86 on OpenCritic just a few days after it was released.
To celebrate its attainment of the one million player mark, Capcom published an illustration featuring Miyamoto Musashi alongside a Komainu.
In its statement the company stated that “It is our true pleasure that so many people are playing Onimusha” and also mentioned that “We really appreciate all the player feedback as well as the video posts”. It finished by asking its new audience to “continue supporting ‘Onimusha: Way of the Sword’ in the future”.
Before the game was released, Satoru Nihei had set the tone by saying, “At last I am truly pleased to be able to present a title which we have been developing for a long time,” and adding that “I hope the players will immerse themselves in the special world of Onimusha and enjoy the carefully refined action.”
Why Onimusha’s One-Day Sales Milestone Matters
For the franchise which had been on hold for 20 years, achieving the sale of one million units on its first day was a significant accomplishment.
Even though the Onimusha series had built up its reputation during the PS2 era through the massive sales of its early games, the long break meant that it was necessary to win over a new audience, and the demo campaign was of help because it gave players a free way in.
The game is in the highest category of all the action titles from 2026 since its critical score lies between 85 and 86; the positive reviews will help sustain word-of-mouth purchases in the weeks after its release, as it is during this time that many single-player games see their greatest decline in sales.
Way of the Sword is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. However, Capcom has not yet confirmed whether any additional content or future titles will be released.
As the game continues with its commercial launch in the coming weeks, more information about post-launch support will be given.
