Security Researcher Publishes Method to Run Linux on PS5, Demonstrating GTA V at 60fps With Ray Tracing

Security researcher Andy Nguyen has shared a method for running Linux on certain PlayStation 5 units, along with setup instructions available on GitHub.

This is an earlier demonstration where Nguyen showed Ubuntu running on the console, with Grand Theft Auto V achieving 60 frames per second with ray tracing turned on and Spider-Man running at 1440p at 60fps. The modification is temporary. Rebooting the console wipes the Linux environment, so users need to reload it each time the system is turned on.

PS5 Linux Compatibility Requirements

The exploit is only effective on disc-based PS5 models running firmware versions 3.xx and 4.xx. It does not support systems updated to firmware 5.xx. Nguyen mentions that support for firmware versions 1.xx and 2.xx might be added in the future, but it is not currently a priority.

What Works and What Does Not in the PS5 Linux Setup

The implementation includes adjusted VRAM allocation and working fan controls for stable operation. Display output is supported at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, with refresh rates currently capped at 60Hz. Nguyen states that 120Hz support may be added in the future.

Network connectivity requires a workaround after boot. Users may need to toggle the WLAN adapter off and on to restore internet access following startup. These limitations reflect the early state of driver support for hardware not originally designed to run Linux.

Nguyen is exploring a shutdown option that would place the console into Rest Mode rather than fully powering off, allowing Linux to be relaunched without repeating the full setup process.

Project Scope and Limitations

Nguyen states there is no risk of bricking the console, which reduces the barrier for users willing to try the method. The project is focused specifically on running Linux and does not open the door to the broader homebrew software or game backup capabilities seen in earlier PlayStation hacking scenes.

The tools and instructions are available on GitHub. The project is described as best suited to users already comfortable working in Linux environments.
